The Weather is changing and I’ve started to notice dry and uneven areas on my face and body. Being an advocate of Ayurvedic principles and home based natural solutions, I was determined to tackle this the holistic way.
They say when “”The student is ready , A master appears.”

A dear friend gifted me a turmeric body scrub by Scrubs ‘N’ Jazz . I used it and was pleasantly surprised and delighted with the results. I was intrigued to know more. So when an opportunity knocked, I decided to attend a workshop held by Scrubs ‘N’ Jazz.

It turned out to be a really fun and engaging afternoon, learning about a variety of scrubs made from 100% natural ingredients. We also learned and discussed how to choose carrier oils and essential oils for different skin types to aid with exfoliation and moisturizing.

Making scrubs from scratch

Inspired by the process, I sat down with Shirley Fernandes, the Founder of Scrubs ‘N/ Jazz for a Tete A tete. Here are some excerpts of our conversation enjoyed over a cup of tea and delicious home baked goodies.

When and how did you discover your passion in Scrubs’N’Jazz

My passion for SCRUBS’N’JAZZ all started when I began to realize how important going back to all things natural and homemade is. Took me back to when we were teenagers ourselves, our beauty regiment consisted of simple home remedies passed on by our mums. Some of us will totally associate with Turmeric / Yoghurt & Honey or Multani matti (Fullers earth) Rose water , and Sandalwood.

How did it all start?

So I decided to do some research & innovate using the same basics and came up with Sugar /Salt Body Scrubs & Face Packs. Using ingredients which we all have in our pantries at home such as sugar, salt ,oil, coffee, oats, lemons, and oranges, and essential oils to add a spa effect to them.
Each of these have properties which lock in moisture and make your skin glow.

With a lot of encouragement & support from my family & close friends , I was able to launch my range of body scrubs & face packs. And being open to feedback from those who tried them, gave me a push to improve further and suit everyone preferences.

Any particular one you are most proud of ?

My most popular ones being the Lavender Rose & Cinnamon/ Orange Oatmeal Scrubs. And my signature scrub is the Himalayan Pink Salt Scrub which works well to relieve tired muscles & soothe aches & pains.

Is there any challenging moments?

My challenge initially was difficulty in getting my products out there especially during these pandemic times but social media & friend groups helped. I then setup a Facebook page to showcase my products along with benefits and tips on how to use.

Any tips for future entrepreneurs?

It’s very encouraging to receive positive reviews back from regular customers and it surely motivates me to explore more by increasing my line of scrubs and face packs , trademarking my products and creating a brand for the future.

As I’ve waded in this pool of small business , I’ve learnt so much, following these simple tips:

  • Be generous with your product
  • Be kind with your prices
  • Be true to your client

Stay focused but humble. It has surely brought much joy & kept me living out my passion.
