I am extremely excited in documenting my hiking guide to the “Penis Rock” which has recently been awarded “The World’s Best Looking Penis Shaped Rock”. Please click the link if you are interested in finding out the story of this award. Since the publication of the said article, there have been no objections from the internet viewers so I am still very comfortable with this claim, unless someone share an even better penis ‘s looking rock.

Where is this Penis Rock?

This incredible phallic rock is actually located within 1.5 to 2 hours from my home in Shatin, Hong Kong. I have lived here for 20+ years and only recently I discovered this unique rock. This is one of the positive side effects of the pandemic situation which really forces us to look within and to discover its inner beauty. This unique rock stands out from with its giant rock outcrop just before the summit of Nui Po Shan (399m), which is a part of Ma On Shan National Park between Shatin and Sai Kung. There are numerous ways to reach this rock and this post will share 2 possible trails.

This is the quickest and easiest trail to reach the Penis rock. Form Mui Tsz Lam village, you can reach the rock in approximately 45 mins. The first 25 mins is relatively easy gentle ascending path. The last 20 mins is quite steep in few sections but there are ropes to assist with the climb. The challenge is getting to the starting point. There is no public transportation to Mui Tsz Lam Village. You may need to drive on your own or take a taxi.

This loop trail start and ends in City One Shatin. It is longer (around 2.5 hours) than the previous trail but goes through more varieties of scenery including a section of the Shing Mun River and lovely villages of Wong Nai Tau and Shek Kwu Lung. The trail from City One to Mui Fa Ancient trail is a relatively gentle ascent hike with a steep final 20 mins to the Penis rock. The return trail however can be difficult to follow due to overgrown vegetation. In fact, we took the wrong turn while descending down to Wong Nai Tau village. As you can see from the map, the black color trail was our “lost in the jungle” trail. We literally have to find our way down through the dense jungle full of sharp branches.

From City One to Mui Fa Ancient Trail

Follow the Shing Mun river in City One Shatin all the way to Kwong Yuen estate.

Walk along the Siu Lek Yuen road until the bus terminal. There will be a staircase on your left which will bring you to the Mui Fa Ancient trail. Have a look at the video below to get more detail information on how to reach Mui Fa Ancient trail.

Nature around Mui Fa Ancient Trail

This gentle and shaded trail is truly enjoyable to hike. You will pass through some farmlands, village houses, dense jungle and waterfalls. Many varieties of plants, fruits and flowers can be seen here. This include an interesting species of smelly mushroom called Stinkhorn Mushrooms. Stinkhorns are bizarre mushrooms that have strange appearance and unpleasant smell that attract insects. When insects land on the moist opening at the tip of the mushroom, spores will be transferred and spread by the insects.

Steep hike to Penis Rock

After an hour of hiking from City One, you will reach a junction that connects to Mui Tsz Lam village and the Penis Rock. Take the steep trail on your left.

The ladies are in great spirit knowing that the destination is near.

On some steep sections, there are ropes that help with the climb. Very useful.

Found this amazing Luna moth that looks like a leaf. According to Google, it has no mouth and it does not eat as an adult. Lifespan is only for a week. Really lucky to have seen this moth.

The World Best Looking Penis Shaped Rock

After 1.5 hours of hiking and climbing we finally reached the iconic Penis rock. The shape of the rock is really unique and only one image appears in everyone’s mind upon looking at it. No doubt this rock is the best looking penis shaped rock I have ever seen. Furthermore, the rock is standing rock hard in a beautiful location and that makes it a spectacular photo taking location. To add more excitement to it, this rock seems to have separated with its main rock and one has to wonder how can such a huge long rock stand upright in nature. In addition, the base that this rock is laying on is not flat at all. Miracle of nature I would say. Have a look at the video below to fully appreciate the grandeur of this rock.

The Summit of Nui Po Shan Hill (399m)

The happy Bananians enjoying their bananas. It has been our team ritual to eat or pretend to eat bananas after reaching our destination.

The summit of Nui Po Shan can be reached within 10 mins climb from the penis rock. Worth climbing above the penis rock for more picture taking opportunities.

Returning to City One

The return journey should be an easy one. But we chose the wrong trail or miss the correct one on our way down. Took quite some time trying to zig zag our way through the dense jungle. We could retraced our track back up but decided to continue our own way down.

Found a huge jackfruit tree on the way down. Used to see a lot of these fruit trees near my hometown in Malaysia.

Passed through a few farms.

Rina and Rebecca are so excited to find a beautiful banana leaf. They brought it home to make “Nasi Lemak”

  1. You have located a great collection of Rock Phallic Symbols. I would like to add another one to your list which is right here in North America. It’s my considered opinion that these symbols are not just randonly eroded rocks that happen to look like Phallic Symbols by coincidence. I believe these rocks remain to this day because they were carved and created by a religion that came to this continent about a thousand years ago. Vajrayana Buddhist cleric missionaries came here and carved these phallic symbols here just as they had also done in Asia. It was a part of Buddhism, their religion
For more information and pictures on this topic go to “Vajrayana Buddhism in pre Columbian North America”. You can also see this same image again in two internet locations. Google: “Wahweap Hoodoos by Tanya” It’s the third picture in the second row. Also “Wahweap Hoodoos-Outdoor Photographer”
“Buddhist Symbols, Customs and Monuments in North America” & “Agni-Hindu God of Fire-Tibetan Buddhist Encyclopedia”

    • Thank you for providing detail info on another Rock Phallic symbols. I will definitely add this into the collection list

Let us know what you think
