We flown from Frankfurt to Dubrovnik with Croatia Air. The are not many flights from west europe to Dubrovnik, so you should plan and buy the tickets earlier if you wish to visit Dubrovnik.

Despite the additional travel requires to reach Dubrovnik, it is truly worth it as it is a magical place with plenty of things to do, places to eat, and history!! It has also became famous in recent years due to its association with Games of Thrones. In the highly popular tv series, the fantasy kingdom “Kings Landing” was filmed in many different location in Dubrovnik.

The setting for King’s Landing Harbour is visible from Pile Harbour which is just outside the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik close to Pile Gate. Dating back to 1537, Pile Gate is a stone gate at the entrance to Dubrovnik Old town. This is the where we started our walking tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. If you are a fan of the tv series, then you can join the popular Game of Thrones tours.

Once you enter the Pile Gate, the wow moment begins. It really felt as if you have gone back through times to the ancient city. The sight of Stradun street running all the way to the Ploce gate is awesome. Nearby is a interesting fountain call Big Onafrio Fountain which is weird to me because there is no water fountain!! There must a rich history behind which I do not have the time to research.

This is the main square of the town. The Bell Tower, Sponza Palace and Dubrovnik Cathedral are all here. This is certainly a magical town that makes you feel in a very ancient era. I recommend staying inside the walls if you enjoy the old city atmosphere but the price will be double compare to hotels outside of the walls.

This cathedral isn’t as impressive as those found in European cities. Yet its interior in its simplistic style will still hold your attention. It’s worth a visit while you’re wondering around the streets of Dubrovnik.

There is a celebration at the square with traditional music and dance. The costume and dancing are really nice. Lucky we were there at the right time to witness this celebration.

On Gundulić Square, there is a small open-air market, where stall holders sell local seasonal produce including the famous lavender perfume and lotion. We bought some from the stalls.

I immediately recognise this staircase as one of the scenes from Games of Thrones. The Jesuit Staircase doubles as the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing. The most famous scene filmed here is the Cercei’s atonement walk where she was stripped naked and forced to walk through the streets with thousands of people throwing everything at her.

After spending few hours in the old town, we returned back to Pile gate to checkout the famous fortress. Fort Lovrijenac (also known as the St Lawrence Fortress) is a stunning fortress located outside the Pile gate. It is also called the Red Keep in King’s Landing kingdom.

The climb to the Fort affords superb views of the City Walls, making it a favourite photo spot. There are a total of 175 steps, to reach the upper level, complete with canons and a small chapel. The pier on this harbour is called Blackwater Pier in the GOT series.

Beautiful view from the top of the Fort. Unfortunately the fort is closed when we arrived at the entrance. It is almost 6 pm when we arrived, guess we spent too much time in the inner city. To close our trip, we had dinner near the harbour before going back to the inner city to take one last shot of the night view of this medieval kingdom.
