Pineapple Hill, also know as the mini Grand Canyon of Hong Kong, has become an Instagram hotspot in recent years. Allegedly, locals named the unique rock formations as such due to their resemblance to the cracked crust of Hong Kong’s famous Pineapple Buns.

Located in the Northwest of Tuen Muen, the canyon has been shaped by nature over the years, creating lots of ridges and dips. The hike is relatively easy – only a short trail with a slightly steep incline. You could do an afternoon hike, wait for the sunset, and take lots of breath-taking photos!

How to get to Pineapple Hill:

  • Take the MTR to Siu Hong station.
  • Find Light Rail 505 on track 5
  • Take the Light Rail to Leung King Light Rail Station
  • Hike starts from behind Leung King estate

For me, I took a direct bus from Tung Chung. E33P stops at Sai Wan Court, then take a 15min walk to reach Leung King estate where the hike starts.

Here is a brief summary of Pineapple Hill hike:

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Distance: 6km
  • Elevation Gain : ~ 300 m
The entrance to the trail
After an hour of hike, we were greeted by this warning sign.

As I approaches the canyon and the sun was setting, the light hit the edge and gave out a spell-bounding sight. It is like a Midas-touch on the canyon. Feast for the eyes.

For my return journey, I retraced the same trail back to Leung King estate. Another popular return journey is to continue down the Castle Peak Range road, turn right onto Nim Wan road and then continue to the final destination of Pak Nai Beach. From there, catch a minibus back to Yuen Long. Pak Nai Beach is a popular place to watch sunset, but for me, I’m happy with my sunset on the way home.
