There is a saying “The best things in life happen unexpectedly”. There are instances where you never prepare for a particular journey, yet it turns out to be one of the best that you’ve ever had. 3rd Jan 2021 marks that journey – my first ever outdoor rock-climbing experience.

On the very first day of 2021 my dear friend Kevin posted an invite “Anyone interested in hiking to Tai Long Beach in Sai Kung this weekend. Simple hike 45 mins to the beach.. Have our lunch in one of sea facing restaurant.. Then continue hiking to nearby 2 rock pools and back..”

I have always declined joining Kevin and his wife Jessy as their hiking trip is always seemingly dangerous. But this time I agreed without any hesitation, thinking hiking to the beach can’t be strenuous. The picturesque beach and lunching in a sea facing restaurant were too appealing to decline. I was on cloud nine when hubby and another close friend Dary said they are joining too.

We started off our hike late Sunday morning. Even though it’s January, it felt like an awesome summer day. The initial chilly feeling was quickly erased by the warm rays and the blue sky. I was abit concerned walking far with my weak knees but the magnificent views and the crisp fresh air made me feel alive. I found myself inhaling deeper than normal, appreciating the freshness and the beauty of nature.

Our plan is to hike from Sai Wan Pavilion to Sai Wan Beach (45 mins) and then Sai Kung Rock Pools (20 mins). There are many ways to reach Sai Wan Pavilion. First, you need a find your way to Sai Kung Town Center. Once you are in Sai Kung, there are few options:

  • Take minibus 29R (opposite MacDonald) to Sai Wan Pavilion (25 mins)
  • Take a taxi (~100 Hkd) to Sai Wan Pavilion
  • Take a speedboat to either Sai Wan beach or Ham Tin beach (about 30 minutes), which costs $120 to $150 per person.

The route to the beach wasn’t much of an elevation, it was rather more of a downhill ski exercise. I learned that side steps walking is recommended to avoid putting pressure on the knees. Along the way we have to be careful to avoid stepping on those big lumpy “natural fertilisers”.

Around 20 mins into the hike, we could glimpsed the awesome scenery of high island reservoir.

When we arrived at the village which is adjacent to the beach we were greeted by a few black cows and a calf. Immediately I was busy clicking away on my phone, trying to capture the best view of the calf.

As we moved towards the beach front the sound of the waves, the flapping of the beach flag, the smell of food aroused my senses. I felt like a child ready to charge to the beach but then nature call won. There was a public toilet nearby and I was delighted that it was clean and well maintained.

We chose the sea facing restaurant despite the food being pricey than others but believe me it was definitely worth it. Lunch was simple but eating with a sea and mountain view was blissful.

After lunch we walked along the Sai Wan beach, the most popular beach in Tai Long Wan, as it is the most easily accessible. There are two beach restaurants here where you can grab lunch, buy speedboat tickets, rent beach gear or pick up some drinks and snacks: Hoi Shan Restaurant and Oriental Restaurant and Bar.

After the beach walk, I thought soon we will be heading back. Then I realised the highlight of the trip was just about to begin. Kevin led us through some bush plants, I was taking careful steps on the rocky paths, a big contrast to Kevin’s swift movements. I was in awe of the sight when I emerged from the bush – never have I thought I would see artistically chiselled rocky mountain and rock pools, though small in size but enough to trigger my excitement. I marvelled at God’s creation as I breathed in the serenity.

Sai Kung rock pools is known for its gorgeous pools, spectacular rock formation and the possibility of cliff jumping. The trail is a series of 4 pools and falls that run along the river that joins the sea at Sai Wan. Used to be a hidden gem, the rock pools is now one of the popular hiking destinations in Sai Kung.

A novice at rock climbing, my hubby Eric and I took caution with each footstep. Honestly we were concerned if the rocks are secured and will not give way. Under Jessy’s guidance on which rocks to take, Eric and I effortlessly reached the other side of the mountain; No time was wasted as it was the best spot for some photo taking.

Eric and I are truly grateful to enjoy the company of Kevin, Jesse and Dary on our first outdoor rock climbing. They have stirred our interest and ignited our confidence to have a go at rock climbing. It was an unforgettable day, a good source of positive energy from spending time with nice people and appreciating the beauty of nature. I felt so blessed! what a lovely way to kick off 2021…
