Hi guys! I’m Rina and I’m also a crew. I’ve always been a big fan of the outdoors especially running and hiking. I’ve done a bunch of half marathons and trail runs around Asia and loads of hiking in Hong Kong.
Living in Hong Kong has given me the opportunity to explore the many beautiful hiking trails. Being able to witness the spectacular sunrises and sunsets and the amazing view of Hong Kong while you’re up there on the mountains is beyond words and for that I’m blessed and grateful.
Then in June last year, the unthinkable happened. I was stream hiking in Ma On Shan, jumped from a rock about 50cm high and suddenly I heard a loud ‘pop’ sound from my right knee. One of the most excruciating pain I’ve ever felt.
I literally dragged myself back down on my butt for the next 45 mins where I was rescued. I found out later that my right ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) was completely ruptured and I’m left with no choice but to go for an ACL reconstruction surgery.
The surgery was a big one and nothing really prepares you for the pain you’ll feel. First couple of weeks after surgery was definitely rough. My morale was low while feeling hopeless and helpless. Sitting on the sideline watching my friends enjoying the summer hiking, running, beaching etc wasn’t ideal either.

Nonetheless I was determined to get back to 100% of my physical ability. I followed my surgeon’s and physiotherapist’s orders of do’s and don’ts religiously. I worked very hard during physiotherapy sessions and never missed any. At home I work a lot on rebuilding a strong core, agility and flexibility. I was determined to get back on the mountains and tracks.
I’m at 6 months post op now and I’m still working hard on my recovery. I must say I’m pleased with my progress so far. Never thought I’m able to do a 20KM hike anytime soon but I did it a couple of weeks ago and a few more after that so yayy for the small victories.

I’m thankful for friends and family who have been very supportive and especially to my husband who is my rock throughout this jourknee!
Attached are some photos of some of the hikes I did after my surgery and you can see why I’m always in awe whenever I’m on those mountains.
It’s still a long recovery process ahead of me but I’m ready. It’s important to stay focus and keep a positive mind.
My goal is to be able to run another marathon again pain free and to be able to enjoy the small and simple things in life that I used to take for granted. Hope you’ll enjoy the photos and thank you for taking the time to read!
