While I was reading the interview of a crew colleague Mariam and her singing passion, another face flashed in my memory. This face was a boy I met almost a decade ago when he join our airline. I remember him being a friendly but shy person. Then one day, a few years later I had the pleasure of watching him perform on stage and to my surprise he was a completely different person. The stage, guitar and the microphone transformed him into an absolute confident performer. I recently caught up with him online to chat and found out more about his aspirations. His name is Grover DLima and I am happy to introduce this talented flight purser to the crew-explorer community.
When or How did you discover your passion in singing?
Music has been a part of my life since I was a little child. From a very young age, I always had a keen interest in performing on stage, whether it was dancing, dramatics or singing.
Singing however has always been most enchanting and has helped me communicate with the world and the people around me. It’s how I express my feelings and emotions through music n lyrics. My experience and passion for singing has taught me that it is an extremely therapeutic and relaxing hobby.
What is your most memorable experience in singing?
It was about a decade ago during Christmas, while I was performing carols at the home for the elderly. I distinctly remember that day when I was performing along with other members of the choir.
We performed for them and tried to provide them with some entertainment and uplift their spirits. It was indeed a magical experience, because it turned out to be such a effervescent experience and we were showered with love and blessings from all the elderly members living there. I was certain that it was me who benefitted more from the whole experience. It taught me that even a small gesture of giving can create a big impact on others.
Any challenging moments ?
To be honest, the few minutes before any performance is the most challenging. However, once I start singing, it just takes over my soul and there is nothing that I could be worried about. In fact singing relaxes me !
Any particular events/awards that you are particularly proud of ?
Although awards are necessary and important to encourage most singers, I believe that performing and participating in events have an equally positive influence.
I have had the opportunity to sing with the Asian Youth Orchestra. It was an uplifting experience. The practice sessions, the rehearsals and the main event have all taught me so much. It was an honor to perform with such talented singers, musicians and directors. I thank Cathay Pacific from the bottom of my heart for this magnolious opportunity.
Also, winning the title of the Best Stage performance in 2015, and at the 20th CX Singing Contest has helped me further build my confidence and has proven to be such a boost of encouragement.
Who is your favourite singer/song?
Although I’m not a moody person, my current mood plays a decisive role in picking my favorite song. However my Spotify playlist shuffles between The Beatles, Sinatra, Presley & The Queen. Oh Yes ! .. I strongly believe that “Old is Gold”
What is your plan in future?
I sometimes post videos of me singing with my guitar on my Instagram page. I reckon that it keeps my friends and followers entertained, just as it keeps me rejuvenated and refreshed.
I intend to keep inspiring and spreading love through my songs. In short # Keep Calm and Keep Singing !
