Glacier Trekking Diavolezza to Morteratsch
This spectacular tour immerse you into the fascinating world of the glaciers that surround you on all sides. Walking among the five billion tonnes of ice covering a distance of 12 km is a surreal experience that one will never forgets.
This tour starts from the Diavolezza summit station across the Pers and Morteratsch Glaciers and back down to Morteratsch railway station. Sufficient stamina is needed to cope with the 5 hours hike and 1,100m altitude difference.
From the Diavolezza mountain station the hike leads down to the Pers Glacier, crossing it to the Isla Persa. From here the hike cross to the Morteratsch glacier along deep crevasses and waterfalls. We then follow the Morteratsch glacier up to its very end which leads us to the train station Morteratsch.
Mountaineering boots or hiking shoes (above ankles), rain and sun protection, and walking sticks are advisable. Crampons are provided.

After putting on our crampons, sunglasses and walking stick, we are all ready to hike. Its a surreal experience walking on a glacier. Its hard to describe it. Imagine you are on top of a huge sheet of ice; extended as far as you eyes could see.

Walking on the glacier is a fantastic feeling, mixed with certain degree of anxiety as well. There is no indication of how thick the ice plate we were walking on, certainly there is no guarantee for our safety. Crampons and hiking pole are recommended on this type of hike.

The scenery is awesome all around. We kept taking photos until we are left way behind. Our tour guide has given up on us. He was nowhere to be found after a while.

After 2 hours of hiking, we took a break at the lower end of the Pers Glacier. Views are phenomenal from all angles with Piz Bernina at the background, huge boulders hanging between ice crevasses, glacier motaine and waterfalls.

Instead of going straight down along the glacier, our guides takes us to the side of the glacier and climb up a rock boulder instead. Guess the path ahead is dangerous. There is a queue in this section. Quite a number of people joining glacier hiking tour today.

Stepping onto the glacier itself is a surreal experience especially for those who live in hotter countries. Generally I do not like guided tours as I like to explore places on my own, but this glacier crossing is dangerous without a guide as there are many hidden deep crevasses beneath the glacier.

The trail becomes rocky towards the end of the Morteratsch Glacier. We seems to be walking on a rocky trail but beneath us are still ice.
